Job Summary

The City of Lawrence cares about its built environment and strives to ensure all structures, both new and old, that are required to have building permit applications submitted and approved are compliant with the City’s adopted building codes including plumbing, mechanical, electrical, energy and all other applicable City codes related to the construction and development of a property. We are seeking an innovative, highly skilled, and collaborative individual to join the Building Safety Division in accomplishing these essential job responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • This position serves as the permit technician for building permit applications associated with residential and commercial projects, both new construction and existing buildings. This position performs responsible technical work in the review, processing, and issuance of building construction permits. Candidates must have strong background in administrative and customer support with a background in building code compliance preferred, and have strong communication and writing skills, be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with contractors, architects, engineers, land developers and other community members involved in the regulation of the City’s built environment.



Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in construction technology, code enforcement or a related field preferred.  Two years of technical or administrative support to professional codes administration staff, or equivalent. Progressively responsible experience in the regulation of city codes with an emphasis in commercial and residential building code compliance is ideal.  Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid driver’s license, and various job-related International Code Council certifications as deemed appropriate by staff.
