Job Summary

The City of Lawrence Municipal Services & Operations Department is a full-service, front-line operational department. The department provides community services in infrastructure and maintenance (facilities & structures, street and stormwater maintenance, pavement management, water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment), engineering (engineering design and technical support, stormwater, utility and traffic engineering), services (solid waste, water, wastewater, fleet management, and administrative functions). Municipal Services & Operations projects and services are vital to the growth, health, safety, comfort and quality of life for our community.

Job Responsibilities

100% - This position performs various technical, operational, educational, and administrative tasks related to the environmental programs within the Municipal Services and Operations (MSO) Department of the City of Lawrence. The primary responsibilities assigned to staff in this position are at the Douglas County / the City of Lawrence KS Household Hazardous Waste facility. Assignments include hazardous waste collection, receiving, handling and disposal through various waste stream vendors. Receive household hazardous waste products at the facility, perform off-loading, categorize, and process hazardous waste streams for designated vendor disposal. This position assists in maintaining compliance with federal, state and local requirements and regulations regarding solid waste and hazardous waste. The incumbent will be involved with the development and implementation of City goals, objectives, policies, and priorities related to the Household Hazardous Waste, Recycling and Waste Reduction Program. Operation of various industrial supplies and equipment required, including forklifts and lifting up to 50 pounds. Perform safety checks and maintain the secure operation of all equipment at the HHW facility site.

Qualifications

Qualifications -

HS Diploma/GED with two years of university, community college, business school, trade or technical school coursework required, with coursework in environmental sciences, Natural/physical sciences, biology, chemistry, public relations or administration, or a related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred.


24-hour HHW operators certificate will be required within 6 months of the date of hire.

Knowledge or work experience of regulations pertaining to hazardous waste management and fluency in MS Office applications such as excel data sheets are required. Must have a valid driver’s license, currently in possession of, or the ability to obtain. The successful candidate must pass a City physical and drug screen.
